Utawala Estate, Nairobi Borehole Project

Many people know Water for the World as world class “bush drillers” with the expertise and capacity to provide services to marginalized and under-served communities in the most remote and hostile parts of the country. However, W4W also provides services to institutions such as schools and hospitals, hotels, residential and apartment blocks as well as private homes to city and urban clients.
Our most recent project was drilling a 200m deep borehole at Utawala Estate in Nairobi.

Utawala Estate is located 25 kilometers south-east of Nairobi city centre. Utawala Estate is in Embakasi Division in Nairobi’s Eastlands area and lies just beyond the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) going towards Kangundo. The Administration Police Training College (APTC) is located next to the estate. “Utawala” is a Kiswahili word that is the equivalent of “Administration” in English.

Utawala is one of the fastest growing estates in Nairobi. In the last 15 years, Utawala has been transformed from a grassland patronized by Masai herdsmen and their cattle, to the current bustling estate where private homes are interspersed with residential flats and commercial shopping and entertainment centers. Utawala’s accelerated growth comes at a price of limited, under-developed or non-existent infrastructure such as roads, sewage and water. For example, it is common to see water being transported by donkey from a water selling point to paying customers in homes.

Utawala Estate is particularly vulnerable to water scarcity given its unfavorable proximity from the Nairobi city water supply, and the current drought that has occasioned water rationing measures in Nairobi’s water supply. As a result, boreholes have become necessary in order to provide the necessary top up to Utawala’s water deficit.
