Sololo is a small town in Kenya’s former Eastern Province, now part of Marsabit County. It is the 4th largest urban centre in Marsabit County with a population of 5,104. (Source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sololo)
Sololo is located on the Moyale-Sololo escarpment which has semi-arid climatic conditions. Lack of water in Sololo reaches life-threatening levels especially during the dry season. In the just ended drought in Kenya, Sololo recorded a number of fatalities amongst infants and older people.
Up till a while back, many failed borehole drilling attempts had been made by various agencies in the region. To be specific, over 18 boreholes have been drilled, and each turned up dry, without a single success.
The first successful borehole was drilled in 2011 by W4W, for KAG Sololo Makutano Church, under the facilitation of Kenya Assemblies of God. This was the only borehole within 20km and served well for more than 10 years before it broke down in December 2020. Unfortunately, the borehole as not serviceable and for two and a half years, the community was without a local source of water.
In January 2023, W4W contacted a well-wisher, Mr. Kody Barbier, a KAG Missionary, on behalf of the Sololo community for support. It was with great joy and relief that on 5th April, 2032, W4W drilled a second borehole successfully to a depth of 145m with a tested yield of 4.5m3/hour.
On behalf of the Sololo community whose lives this borehole will touch, we thank God for Mr. Kody Barbier for his philanthropy.
